In John 15:1-2, Jesus compares Himself to a vine and His followers to branches. He uses pruning as a metaphor for the process of refining and purifying those who are abiding in Jesus in order for them to bear more fruit.⁠

This parable emphasizes the importance of pruning. Just as a gardener prunes a vine to remove parts of the plant that aren’t producing fruit, God prunes and purifies His followers so they may bear the fruit of His Spirit (ref Gal 5:22-23). ⁠

The pruning process involves cutting away dead or unfruitful parts of a plant. It symbolizes the removal of things in a person's life that are hindering them from producing the fruits of the Spirit in order to make way for greater spiritual growth and a closer relationship with God.⁠
