In John 15:1-2, Jesus compares Himself to a vine and His followers to branches. He uses pruning as a metaphor for the process of refining and purifying those who are abiding in Jesus in order for them to bear more fruit.
This parable emphasizes the importance of pruning. Just as a gardener prunes a vine to remove parts of the plant that aren’t producing fruit, God prunes and purifies His followers so they may bear the fruit of His Spirit (ref Gal 5:22-23).
The pruning process involves cutting away dead or unfruitful parts of a plant. It symbolizes the removal of things in a person's life that are hindering them from producing the fruits of the Spirit in order to make way for greater spiritual growth and a closer relationship with God.
Ask yourself today: what needs to be pruned out of my life in order for me to bear more fruit?
