If you want to read a good book about the Galveston hurricane, Eric Larson's book "Issac's Storm" is an accurate historical account that reads like a novel.
@HealthRanger One thing that keeps bugging me about the Carrie Madej plane crash is didn't the plane have an Emergency Locating Transponder? She said air traffic thought that they had landed. I have to assume that was air traffic at an Air Route Traffic Control Center, which controls en route traffic, not terminal traffic. So the airport they were landing at, at the least, did not have terminal radar and most probably was a non-controlled field, otherwise they would have been handed off to the terminal air traffic. If they were handed off to terminal ATC, some one should have known that they did not arrive. But even given that, didn't the plane have an ELT? It seems like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. You're a pilot, you know this stuff. I'm just a former FAA radar tech.
I have a question. I had solar installed and a potion of what I generate is returned to my electric provider. Will that help my neighbors if the power grid is taken down or will the provider be unable to supply energy period?

Why do you think a sat phone can't be traced? They use the U.S. military satellites. Do you really think this DoJ could not force the military to divulge "terrorist" phone locations? I'm sure the companies won't divulge it, but what about the military? Couldn't the military also decide to shut down the sat phones during an "emergency"? The satellites are very accurate although they degrade it for civilian use.
