I’m pivoting to something just as dangerous, if not more so. My father was a crop duster who flew in an open cockpit plane spraying DDT and 24D and other chemicals used as insecticides.When he’d come home from work I’d run and jump into his arms kissing and hugging him while he was still covered in those chemicals.Neither he nor my mother thought anything about it. Every time I walk through the outdoor area in Lowe’s or Home Depot I’m immediately brought back to those days because of the smell. I now think about all of those old crop dusting services, including my father’s, that should have been cleaned up because of the use of chemicals like methyl parathion, paraquat,and guthion, but weren’t.People now live next to those sites and I’m sure those chemicals have leached into the water supply or the runoff into new surrounding subdivisions, showing up in the food grown in those areas.
