We really like what the Barnes commentary has to say on this verse, namely that the merciful are those who are affected by the sufferings of others, and that it's proof of piety.

God wants our hearts, not just a bunch of good works where we're going through the motions. If we're truly merciful, we're sensitive to the needs of others. We can put ourselves in their shoes. We're not going to be quick to judge and condemn.

And when God sees us adopt a merciful spirit, He's going to be more merciful to us. This is all in line with other verses in scripture, such as: Mat 7:2, Mat 6:15, 1 Cor 13:3

Notice the IF there. You can SAY you're a Christian all day, but if you're willfully practicing a different way of life, then you're NOT one. Faith without works is dead (James 2:17).

That DOESN'T mean you can work your way to heaven...you CANNOT. But if you have TRUE SAVING FAITH, there will be evidence of that in the way you live. Make sense?

Why is this ex-atheist a Christian? Let's try and address that in a minute or less!

I'm not the type of person who was EVER going to be convinced by feelings, and so for me, there had to be evidence. When I discovered, through years of arguing with theists, that there actually IS good evidence for God and the Bible, I had to change my position in order to maintain intellectual honesty...and so, I became a reluctant believer. Good times haha
